gamosa (Assamese) - a heritage textile of Assam

This textile is typically Assamese and can be found in every household. It epitomizes respect and is given to people during functions, as a sign of welcoming and saying thank you. Also, people wear it during festivals as decoration. The more simple ones are also used as clothes and wraps or towels.
Nowadays most of them are made from millspun cotton but we have always been wanting to make a true Assamese "gamosa", made with fiber available in the region and natural dye. The yarn used is entirely eri silk and the typical design
is woven with madder dyed yarn. The design is the border of one side of the gamosa. It is hand-spun and hand-woven by our team in Assam. The silk is called eri silk and cultivated by Assamese tribal communities South West of Guwahati. It is a wild silk and the moth leaves a hole in the cocoon as it has to be empty before it can be processed. Therefore it has a structure which is rather similar to linen.

      • 100% eri silk from Assam
      • 50cm x 150cm
      • windproof and very robust fabric, ideal for any season
      • naturally dyed with madder
      • farming: 45 days
      • spinning: 2 days
      • dyeing: 1 day
      • weaving: 2 days + knotting fringes
Please note: This product is entirely made by hand. Therefore, irregularities in thickness of yarn are characteristic to the craft of handspinning. The fabric and the dye will change over time - the silk is becoming softer and the dyes lighter.  Please cold wash only with mild detergent and dry in the shade. Do not soak.
