yalka (Ladakhi) - tree branch

This carpet is made from hand-spun sheep wool yarn. It is woven in the traditional Changthang style, on a portable backstrap loom characteristic for the nomadic communities.
It is a unique piece. This type of carpet is called "Tsug Dul" and traditionally used as a blanket during the icy cold winter months as well as throughout the entire year. The weft is loosely inserted which results in a soft, more blanket-like texture than a usual carpet.
The carpet  consists of 6 panels, each around 32cms wide. They are stitched together by hand at the back with a cotton yarn.
It is spun and woven by our team of settled nomads close to the city of Leh.

This is a sample piece from our first production in 2017. Additional information about the weaving and the tradition here.
