challi (Ladakhi) - name for this heritage textile

This carpet is made from hand-spun sheep wool yarn. It is woven in the traditional Changthang style, on a portable backstrap loom characteristic for the nomadic communities. This type of carpet is called "Challi" and traditionally used as an outside blanket to dry barley on. It is a flat weave and approximately 4mm thick. The carpet consists of 8 panels. After weaving, they are stitched together. The carpet is 155cm x 210cm.
It is spun and woven by our team of settled nomads close to the city of Leh.
